Expert system — An expert system is an early form of AI that captures a specialist’s knowledge as a set of if-then rules. They were popular in the 1980s for tasks such as medical diagnosis and equipment repair. They worked well in narrow areas but were hard to maintain. Machine learning largely replaced them.
